EU’s 2025 Energy Storage Package
To boost energy storage capacity and clean energy investments.
The European Commission has announced a European Grid Package, set for launch in late 2024, to boost energy storage capacity and clean energy investments. The plan aims to streamline legislation, reduce project authorization times, and remove barriers to renewables and infrastructure development.
Key Progress & Challenges
The EU is close to its 2030 target of 55% GHG reduction, with current plans achieving 54%.
12 member states have met the 42.5% renewable energy target, with the EU average at 41% (Spain leads with 47.9%).
205 GW of renewables were added from 2022–2024, saving consumers €100 billion (2021–2023).
Grid flexibility measures are in place, but cross-border interconnections need improvement. 32 GW more capacity is required by 2030.
Some countries (Luxembourg, Slovenia, Latvia, Hungary) exceed the 15% interconnectivity target, while others (Spain, Greece, Italy, France) lag.
Next Steps
A 2025 Climate Adaptation Plan will address weather resilience and risk assessments.
